I love Oppo, I really do. I think I'm a pretty well known name and face around here, but if this is allowed, I will sadly have to leave. It's simply more then I am willing to put up with, so yes, the terrorists will win.

Jalopnik/Oppo/Gawker has no control over who makes accounts and what images they use, but I am sure if something like this is reported they will deal with it accordingly. Especially if some key people read this post?

The most we mods can do is make it impossible for him to post/comment on Oppo and let the Gawker staff know about the impersonation. We can't change or delete his account. But once the Gawker techs are informed they should take care of that.

I fairly sure that replicating of accounts on the internet is an extension of identity theft and is technically punishable by law, if kinja can be held to the same degree as facebook, twitter, etc

The image is mine, originally posted to Facebook, and thus their property and my IP. I mean, if he'd at least altered the image a little he'd avoid that possible law hammer but the fact that he hasn't? Haha. Facebook's dev team is pretty vicious, especially when your friend of many years works there. Eh, ah well. I'll wait and see how Kinja's dev/mod team handles it first.

They are misrepresentations, however, and that bothers me enough not to sit back and ignore it. Bugs me when folks find a perfectly sympatico community like Oppo and just exist to sew the seeds of discontent.

Yeah it sucks. But by threatening to leave you give your impersonators the exact satisfaction they crave.

I am not denying it sucks and that it's frustrating, I just get wound up when people threaten to leave for this or that, while on the whole there are mostly awesome people here and the minor annoyances such as Kinja, annoying commenters and impersonators are fairly trivial in comparison.

We're a pretty capable bunch, that's for damn sure, but my real concern is that this guy is some sort of 4chan drop out without any real purpose in life except to fuck with other people, the kind of guy who is internet tough but afraid of the real world beyond his or her monitor - the kind of terrible excuse for a person who'll fixate and spend the rest of their time trying to fuck another person over in whatever way they can. Online accounts are never 100% secure and a dedicated person can take the over-shares of a guy like me and try to track that person down, fuck with their life in real life.

I just really don't need that at this point in my life. Things are hard enough.

But, sadly, guys who wrench don't tend to internet sleuth and if I'm up against some sort of hacktivist asshole, I hate to think where this might lead. I really do.

Sure, it's probably just some average dude finding an outlet... but...

Yeah, I know what you mean, I've been worried at times that something someone did over the internet would spill into the real life as well, but fortunately, nothing ever happened. I don't think it will go any farther in this case either, it's just some fucktard trying to mess with you and Oppo.

It's more a question of concern and integrity. I'm pretty honest with Oppo and it'd be a real bugger if that honesty about who I am, online, came back to bite me in the ass because some 4chan reject wants to take it to another level.

There was a guy, this normal dude, who had a similar thing transpire and it went way beyond simple forum antics. This guy got put through the wringer by this other forum-head, hacker type. Ruined his life for a while. This guy, he finds out who it was and buys a ticket there...

... and ends up in jail for murdering this 4chan reject.

I am in support of this measure.

But this is a large part of why I try to stay away from FP comments, hanging around on Oppo and only reading FP articles. Oppo is different, it's a big, safe place. This has shocked me pretty much, and if I don't feel like there's a resolution in place I'm gone, I won't risk the future of my career or family because some guy on the internet can't interact properly with others and knows way too much about programming and such.

I'm holding off, right now, but I won't for long. I'll start deleting posts soon enough because as much as I love you all and love Oppo (sporting the stickers on my car, yo) it's not important enough for me to risk being plagued by some demon, even if it's imagined.

Well, worst case scenario, we'll just get used to checking one's kinja URL before replying recommending. That one can't be duped, and switching l's for i's (which I believe is part of his reasoning for choosing a target) won't work either.

Seriously, swapping i's and l's? We used to do that in Team Fortress. The first one, not the sequel, and that was over a decade ago!
